portrait of marquis de lafayette in 1825 from the national portrait gallery

Our presentation ‘Our Nation’s Guest’ tells the story of the General’s 14-month tour of America as the guest of the nation he helped found. His tour included visits to: Butler PA (March 1825), Washington PA (May 1825), Uniontown PA (May 1825), Pittsburgh PA (May 1825), Waterford PA (June 1825), and Erie PA (June 1825).

Who was Lafayette and why did he receive such accolades and warm welcomes everywhere he went on this long journey? The answer lies in the fact that Americans of the time knew the vital contributions he made to his adopted nation. He was a financier, soldier, diplomat, and political theorist.

Presenter Richard Arthur, a Butler County native, is currently the curator of the Eagle Hotel and Stagecoach Stop Museum, part of the living history campus of Fort LeBoeuf Historical Society. Arthur holds a BA degree from Allegheny College and a MA from George Washington University.

* LAYFAYETTE: Financier, Soldier, Diplomat, Political Theorist *
This lecture will attempt to refresh the memory of this great man.
During and after the American Revolution, Lafayette strongly supported human rights for all, especially religious freedom and equality for women. He was an abolitionist and always fought for Liberty, Equality, and Freedom.
