Finding Your African American Roots

Genealogists worldwide agree that one of the most challenging family lines to research are those of African American heritage.
The Lawrence County Historical Society is proud to announce its upcoming “Finding Your African American Roots’ event” on August 30.
The class will address several key topics including:
- Working with Oral Histories
- 1870 Census
- Farm Journals
- State Slavery Statutes
- Vital Statistic Records
Event presenter: Roland Barksdale-Hall
- Founder and first president of the Pittsburgh Afro American Historical and Genealogical Society
- Author of several books on this topic including the African American Family’s Guide to Tracing Our Roots
- Served as editor of the Journal of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society
- Awards include the 2014 James Dent Walker Award and the 2015 Black Caucus of the American Library Association National Leadership Award
